An Open Letter to Christian Parents

I teach in an urban public high school. Over the last few weeks I have noticed a new fashion trend….skulls and bones. This particular type of clothing was once mainly identified with a certain teen counter-culture. However, I am seeing all types of students taken up with this fad. It is becoming main stream. Honestly speaking, it is like halloween occurring in February. Two examples: 1) One female student came to school dressed head to toe in the common skull and crossbones symbol. It was on her headband, her earrings, her skirt, her shoes, and she even had her nails painted with skulls and bones! 2) A male student wore a black jacket that when zipped up is the upper half of a skeleton. The hood even zips up to completely cover his face with a skull. The teeth on the skull were golden to resemble a “grill” mouthpiece commonly worn by thugs. When I first saw him wear it I thought it was a Halloween costume! These students are not what you would consider gothic or punk rockers. The fact that this style is crossing over reveals that the devil is making his move to totally merge all the rebellious counter cultures into one. He is knitting the minds of young people together under the spirit of anti-christ.

This deeply concerns me. These fashion items invariably make light of death, are satanic, and invite the spirit of death into a person’s mind, soul, and environment. How is this happening? How are so many “good”, mostly professing “Christian” youth being caught up in this? Most teenagers will tell you that their clothing is an expression of their personality. When I asked students why they are suddenly wearing skulls and bones, they say because it is cute. Since when did signs of death and evil become cute? One student could not even explain why she felt the urge to wear a belt buckle with the skull and crossbones on it.

This is coming from somewhere! Young people are being influenced by satanic forces that they are not even aware of. It is the devil’s intention to sweep them away in the spirit of the world right into a delusion that will cause them to forsake Jesus Christ and accept his anti-christ.

It is coming from the music. Music….from rock to hip hop carries strong messages of death, not to mention rebellion, sexual perversion, drugs and all other kinds of demonic influences. You are what you eat. If our youth feed on this music (and we know they do) it must come out! The clothing they wear, whether skull and bones, provocative on girls or unkempt on guys, is a sure sign of a deeper spiritual problem.

I beseech all Christian parents to be aware of the spiritual influences in your teen’s life. These are not harmless things. They carry spirits. Just like praise and worship ushers us into the presence of God the Father, this music ushers our kids into the presence of a fallen angel, called satan. This is serious! Look at your child today. Reflect on how they have become withdrawn, rebellious, and drawn to all the filthy things of this world. This is not normal nor is it a phase. It is demonic.

We must engage in spiritual warfare in order to back satan off of our kids. If we don’t step up now, many of them will be lost. He has bound them with so much already, now he has them openly playing with the spirit of death. Let’s act now in prayer and fasting. We can’t continue to ignore the spiritual destruction of our youth by saying that it is not that serious. God will hold us accountable.

Rescue those that are being led away to death. Don’t stand back and let them die. Don’t try to avoid responsibility by saying you didn’t know about it. For God knows all hearts and He sees you. He keeps watch over your soul and He knows you knew! And He will judge everyone according to what they have done. Proverbs 24:11-12 (NLT).

Here are some practical guidelines for confronting this invasion:

If you are not a Christian or need to rededicate your life to Christ do it now!

We must first examine ourselves by seeking the Lord in prayer and fasting to find out where there may be breeches in our relationship with Him that is giving satan legal access to our families and homes.

Next, we must pray for God to reveal what items are in our homes and in the possession of our youth that are cursed things. Do not bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing. Deuteronomy 7: 26 (KJV).

After cleansing, we must pray over our homes and our teen’s possessions and anoint them with oil. This is especially effective during times of fasting. Do this as often as the Holy Spirit prompts. Bind the evil influences in the name of Jesus. Command them to stop influencing your child and forbid them access by pleading the blood of Jesus over you and your family.

Stick with it! Even if it seems like nothing is changing. We must continuously pray, study the word of God, and seek a deepening relationship with Christ despite what the situation looks like.
